★★★★ Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle Review: A side-splitting comedy that will have you laughing for hours

Sit back, relax and prepare to be delighted, astounded and amazed as The Mind Mangler shows you the power of the mind! After conquering the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2022 and blowing the minds of audiences in New York in 2023, ‘The Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle’ has landed in the West End at the Apollo Theatre.

Written by Mischief Comedy’s Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Sheilds, ‘The Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle’ brings to life a character from one of their previous shows, ‘Magic Goes Wrong’. The Mind Mangler, or Keith (yes, he’s called Keith), is back on the road, touring his own show across the country before he embarks on the journey of a lifetime to play a gig in Las Vegas. Armed with a swanky new set, paid for by the legendary Bob Kojak, and boasting the very best tricks in the biz, Keith has it all. He’s just got a few problems – his wife left him, he’s been kicked out of the magic circle and his act seems to be one failure after another.

Combining magic tricks, comedy and audience participation is no mean feat, yet the geniuses behind ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ have mastered it once again. It takes a certain skill to make things go wrong in a way that still entertains and amuses an audience and this trio of writers, who ran with this winning formula 10 years ago, have continued to apply it to this show. With Hannah Starkey’s strong direction, the concept feels fresh, original and unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

Across the course of two hours, we watch in awe as The Mind Mangler attempts to read the audience’s minds, beat a supercomputer at a chess game, and even walk on water. Some tricks go awry, but it’s all part of the fun and, with the help of the magic consultant, Ben Hart, every trick looks impressive and calculated, even those that backfire. Whilst the keen-eyed might be able to spot the planted shout-outs and on-purpose blunders from the true interactions, it isn’t glaringly obvious and doesn’t take away from just how playfully funny they are.

Henry Lewis shines as Keith, delivering a masterclass in comedy. He makes us feel comfortable laughing at the misfortunes that have befallen this middle-aged delusional magician, inviting us to chuckle at the comments made towards his divorce from his cheating ex-wife and allowing us to empathise when he suffers lapses in his confidence. With stance and stare alone, Henry’s stage presence is commanding and it’s enough to have the audience hanging on his every word.

Balancing Keith’s massive ego and bringing him down to Earth is Steve the Stooge, played by the irreplaceable and quick-witted Jonathan Sayer. Whilst Steve doesn’t always get things right (much to Keith’s annoyance), his heart is in the right place and we see this in Jonathan’s incredible performance in some of the more emotional scenes in the show. Jonathan and Henry work harmoniously together, their real-life friendship shining through and playing a part in bringing these fictional characters to life so perfectly.

Sara Perks’ set brings the expected sparkle of a traditional magic show and, despite being minimal, highlights everything in just the right ways. Combined with fantastic lighting design by David Howe, the stage has been transformed into a glittering magician’s paradise.

One of the most impressive and interactive features of Mind Mangler is the video design by Gillian Tan. The backdrop screen is there to aid comedic points instead of hindering them and arguably produces some standout moments. Handheld camera phones being used to advance the interaction element is a stroke of genius and we see individuals beamed up onto a screen in real time for everyone to see. As audience members have their deepest, darkest secrets deduced, you can see their every facial expression which makes you feel involved, no matter if you’re in the front row or in the balcony.

Recognition must be given to Tom Wainwright (who plays Percy) who not only expertly handles this camera and collects secrets from the audience at the start of the show, but also plays a key part in being the magician’s assistant in the tricks throughout. Percy is there to ensure The Mind Mangler’s props are where they need to be and he even aids Keith in reading the audience’s minds. Despite a seemingly small role, Tom brings a sweetness to Percy that has the audience beaming the moment they interact with him in the pre-show.

Overall, The Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle is a side-splitting comedy that will have you laughing for hours and, ultimately, it has heart at its centre, pulling together all the home comforts of a Mischief show that we know and love. It feels familiar yet exciting, bold and brave, breaking barriers with the audience and inviting them to believe in the power of the mind for an evening. This show is not to be missed so grab a ticket, forget the world and laugh until your belly and cheeks are sore!

CAST ANNOUNCEMENT: Initial Lead cast for & Juliet UK Tour announced

To celebrate International Women’s Day, & Juliet has announced its three lead cast members for the upcoming UK tour, opening at Manchester Opera House on 8th July 2024.

Gerardine Sacdalan, a fresh Urdang Academy graduate, will play Juliet, Sandra Marvin, well-known for playing Jessie Grant/Dingle in Emmerdale (ITV) and Patricia Williams in Call the Midwife (BBC), will play Angélique and Lara Denning, who’s West End theatre credits include standby Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard at the Savoy Theatre, Mrs Wormwood and Miss Honey in Matilda at the Cambridge Theatre, will play Anne.

The musical, directed by Luke Sheppard and written by David West Read with music and lyrics from Max Martin & Friends, offers a new perspective on Shakespeare’s classic Romeo & Juliet asking the question ‘what would happen next if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo?’. With recognisable tunes including Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time,” Katy Perry’s “Roar” and chart toppers “Since U Been Gone,” “It’s My Life,” “I Want It That Way,” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” this show breaks free of the balcony scene and offers a romantic comedy that proves there’s life after Romeo.

After a successful run at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London’s West End from 2019-2023, & Juliet will visit some of the UK’s biggest cities including Southampton, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff, Nottingham, Leeds and more.

Further casting is to be announced.

NEWS: 15th Anniversary Concert of the original West End production of Spring Awakening to play at Victoria Palace Theatre

On June 2nd 2024, Spring Awakening will play a concert at Victoria Palace Theatre in London’s West End to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the original London production.

The concert will be produced by Jack Maple and Evelyn Hoskins and will be raising funds on behalf of Imogen Kinchin.

Imogen Kinchin was one of the original producers of Spring Awakening in 2009, guiding the show and its young cast on their journey. Imogen was the Senior Producer at the Lyric Hammersmith for 10 years before joining Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures as Executive Director in 2018. In 2022, Imogen was diagnosed with Stage IV Bowel Cancer. Aside from being one of the most outstanding, creative, inspirational and respected producers in show business, she is a cherished wife, family member and friend. Her cancer is aggressive, yet her resilience is extraordinary, and she remains a positive and hopeful warrior in the face of adversity. A fund, established to support bespoke treatment and her family’s needs as they journey through this cruel disease, has raised over £80,000 to date.

The company of Spring Awakening have kindly chosen to donate the proceeds from the concert to Imogen’s Fund and the link to donate is www.gofundme.com/f/imogens-fund.

Speaking on the anniversary concert, writer of the book and lyrics, Steven Sater said “My youthful dream was to be a part of the theatre in London. So for me, our brilliant original production of Spring Awakening at the Lyric, and then at the Novello, was an answered prayer. Fifteen years later, to bring back that production for a one-night-only anniversary concert, is like having that prayer answered all over again.

Spring Awakening 15th Anniversary Concert tickets will go on sale on Friday 2nd February 2024 at 10am here: www.victoriapalacetheatre.co.uk.

NEWS: Acclaimed Queer, Equine, Comedy, All the Fraudulent Horse Girls Returns for Limited Season this October

Brooklyn Rep and The Glory have announced a seven-performance return of the much-loved, critically acclaimed hit, All the Fraudulent Horse Girls. After receiving glowing reviews, and an OFFIE commendation for the October 2022 run, the one-act Queer absurdist comedy written by Australian playwright Michael Louis Kennedy and directed by Charles Quittner will return to its home at The Glory in Haggerston from October 3 – 8 and October 15 & 16.

Also returning for this limited run is the original cast, consisting of East London Cabaret Drag royalty Cazeleōn as Audrey 1, Beth Graham (In the Basement) as Audrey 2, Alice Morgan-Richards (AKA Dairy King, Alice’s Adventures Underground) as Audrey 3 and Georgia Leila Stoller (JULIE: The Musical) & Rachel Blaquière as the Horse Girls.

The creative team for this run includes Lili Fuller (designer), Matthew Bovee (Movement), Rachel Blaquière (Music), and Tias Volker (Lighting).

Credit: Max Kennedy

Audrey is 11 years old and telepathically linked to all the other horse girls in the world. She devours all things horses; The Saddle Club, Black Beauty, her Shetland pony asthma inhaler, even Cormac McCarthy’s lauded Americana novel All The Pretty Horses. When she tries to steal a police horse on a school trip to prove the legitimacy of her equine obsession, she is kicked in the head and thereafter finds herself in the Mexican desert; in a Cormac McCarthyesque fever dream wherein she must fight her way back to life.

Speaking to the conception of the work, Kennedy states: “It was born of a fascination I have with the concept of ‘Horse Girls’; a demographic of young women whose passion for all things equine alienates them from their less hyper-fixated peers. I also had recently read a lot of Cormac McCarthy’s Western Americana novels and found the hyper-seriousness of the masculine frontier mythology they hold deeply funny in a way that probably wasn’t intentional. If those two thoughts; obsessive young girls and Americana, were part of a venn diagram the intersection was horses and loneliness.”

It is, at its heart, a play about loneliness and neurodivergency. It is a piece of monologue theatre told from the perspective of a young, neurodivergent girl whose passion for horses and horse-adjacent things is so all-consuming it becomes the primary barrier to making friends. In this way she is the ubiquitous ‘weird child’ whose niche interest both sustains and alienates them. It is about the pain of being misunderstood, and the struggle for connection and community.

It is a wild and unruly pastiche of equine references, preteen cringecore, suburban Australiana, and abstract Americana, using elements of monologue, artful panto and contemporary dance.

Think The Saddle Club, Spirit, The Neverending Story, H2O Just Add Water, Blue Water High, National Velvet, Black Beauty, Motorola Razers, scooby bracelets, Soviet Constructivism, Spaghetti Westerns, the chaotic costume styling of The Disney Channel, The Brady Bunch, Tarsem Singh’s The Fall, Peter Greenaway’s The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover, and Brian De Palma’s Carrie

The show was first developed as part of the Fresh Ink program for emerging writers facilitated by Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) and received a development showing as part of Glasgow’s Queer Theory.

All the Fraudulent Horse Girls runs October 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 15 & 16 at 20:00 in The Glory (281 Kingsland Rd, London E2 8AS). Tickets are available on Outsavvy for £15 with ten £12 early koala tickets for each performance. General tickets are £16. To buy tickets, click here

★★★★★ ‘Thirst’ by Callum Hughes Review: An eye-opening, raw and touching love letter that quenches the desire to be heard and understood

Under the arches at Waterloo, you’ll find a eclectic selection of fresh and innovative pieces of theatre devised and performed by some the industry’s most talented creatives. Every year, VAULT Festival champions new and upcoming works of all kinds, breaking boundaries and reimagining the traditional view of what theatre is and can be. Last weekend (January 28th-29th) as part of a tour playing in pubs and venues up and down the country, Thirst, a solo show by Callum Hughes, played two shows in the Studio.

Written and performed by Callum himself, this show takes you on an incredibly personal journey, telling the story of days gone by. We delve into the origins of his love for music and performing, his close relationship with his family and his need to quell the noise in his head with a complicated relationship with alcohol. These elements are carefully woven throughout the show (which has a running time of 60 mins) keeping the audience not only entertained, but inspired and intrigued.

Callum excels, his magnetic personality and natural talent for storytelling captivating the audience, even though it’s only him and his guitar. Strumming a series of soft tones whilst he recites what can only be described as poetry, you almost forget there are others in the room. Throughout, it feels as though you are sharing an intimate moment with a close friend who is baring their soul to you. He jokes and sings, leaving you hanging on his every word. One moment, the audience are sharing laughter about his New Year’s Eve kiss with Felicity Kendal, the next, teary-eyed over his realisations after a brush with death.

These ebbs and flows within script are what make it so thought-provoking, with not a single part of the show that doesn’t call out to someone in the room in one way or another. Whether it’s the comfort in the pub or the nervousness of forgetting your lines, or even building a relationship with your dad, the material is engaging, allowing you to relate to your own, very human, experiences. Often, we are scared to highlight our failures, this show reminds us that they don’t have to define the rest of our lives.

Overall, Thirst is an eye-opening, raw and touching love letter that quenches the desire we all have to be heard and understood. It’s clear that Callum has crafted a stellar piece of theatre with a level of skill that can only be admired, showcasing his vulnerability and warmth throughout.

With humour, honesty and heart, this show is a must-see and deserves to have a long life beyond its tour.

Thirst is currently touring until May 2023. Find out more and book your tickets here.
